| May Evaluation |
|
The May 13th evaluation meeting will be held at the Science Museum of Virginia beginning at 7:00. We welcome back popular guest evaluator and 2006 end-of-year judge, Howard Hudgins. Howard holds a master of fine arts degree in photography from George Washington University, where he taught for five years before moving to Richmond where he established the photography program at J. Sargeant Reynolds. Howard went on to teach photography at JSRCC for thirty years. I hope you will all give Howard a warm welcome as he returns to assist the club this month. Gregory J. Pels |
| A Message From Our Club President |
May has arrived and with it a new season for photographers to emerge and enjoy the wonderful weather and many interesting subjects. During April, club members exhibited their photographs at the Tuckahoe Library in western Henrico and travelled to Staunton to photograph the farmer’s market, glass blowing, and historic architecture. It was a long day for those who stayed through sunset, but I am certain that there will be many interesting images shown from this photo shoot. Thank you John and Taft for organizing this event! On May 15th Emmy and I will be travelling to Assateague Island for our annual spring wildlife shoot. Club members are welcome to join us. We will be staying at the Best Western Chincoteague Island. Spring is usually a great time to photograph birds at Assateague as they are all dressed out in their breeding plumage. After a busy day of photography, there are many great seafood restaurants where we can spend some time together. On a personal note, I have decided to fore go any further chemo treatments. I prefer to build my immune system back up and restore my energy. By doing so, I hope that I will be able to lead more local photo shoots this summer and enjoy the company of club members during those events. Speaking of photo shoots, I am looking forward to returning to Lewis Ginter Gardens, Maymont Park, Belle Island, and some other local areas as well as a field trip to Charlottesville to photograph the historic Grounds of the University of Virginia. I will announce these shoots to all members via email. May is also an opportunity for members to share their work during the evaluation session. Don’t let the word “evaluation” frighten you away. We invite an evaluator to simply critique our work. It helps us grow and develop our skills. And always remember, the evaluator is only giving his or her personal opinion. But hopefully, you will gain some valuable insight into the craft of photography by listening to those comments. Enjoy May and I hope to see you at our monthly meeting. Greg |

Believe it or not, it's already time to "spring clean" our library. We have collected many wonderful magazines and SO appreciate your continued donations. However, many of the magazines are a bit old and, since it appears that no one is really interested in borrowing the oldies and our space is limited, we are going to have a GIVEAWAY! All magazines dated before 2000 are up for grabs!! I'll have the magazines set out at 6:30 p.m. before the upcoming meeting for your browsing pleasure (if you're interested, please try to do this before the meeting, not after). You might want to bring a bag or box. See you Wednesday!
